Tips for Arthritis Pain Relief in Colder Weather

Some people claim they can predict a change in weather based on the state of their aching joints. While there is not much scientific evidence to back this claim, it is true that people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions often report weather-related pain. Here are a few tips to make your joints feel better in cold weather:

  • Dress to keep warm: Wear gloves to protect your fingers and hands from cold weather and leggings under your skirt to warm up your knees. You could also put on several layers of clothing. This way you can remove the outer layers as your body warms up with activity or if there is a change of temperature.

  • Stay well hydrated: According to scientific studies, mild dehydration will increase your sensitivity to pain. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, active, and reduce joint pain.

  • Exercise indoors: If the weather outdoors is too cold for comfort, then exercising indoors can be just as beneficial for your joint health. You can use a treadmill, a stationary bicycle, or easily put together a bodyweight workout program that does not require any equipment.

  • Exercising in a heated swimming pool: Performing exercises such as water aerobics in a heated swimming pool provides arthritic-pain relief in 2 ways – the heat soothes and relaxes your joints, and the water reduces the amount of weightbearing stress. You can then work on improving your range of motion, strength, and endurance with minimum joint pain.

  • Vitamin D supplementation: Your natural source of vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones, is sunlight. Since there isn’t enough of sunlight during the winter, you must consult your doctor about which vitamin D-fortified foods and supplements you can take for arthritis pain relief.
